Srinagar, May 12: Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Itoo said the government is working to strengthen the education sector through improved safety measures, transparent recruitment, modern curriculum and strict accountability in institutions across J&K.

Addressing multiple issues related to the education sector, the Minister said major administrative changes took place after 2019 following the transition of the erstwhile state into a Union Territory.

She said recruitment and policy implementation processes changed significantly, while the government has been making efforts to fill vacancies through the Public Service Commission and Service Selection Board.

Highlighting student safety, Sakina Itoo said several measures have been introduced in schools and colleges, including installation of CCTV cameras and relocation of students from unsafe buildings to secure campuses.

On private educational institutions, the Minister clarified that the government is not against private schools but wants accountability and transparency in the system. She stressed the need for simplified registration procedures and standardisation of prices for essential items like books.

The Minister also acknowledged concerns over academic arrangements and temporary teaching staff. She said many teachers working under such arrangements face uncertainty and frustration, adding that the government is trying to move towards permanent recruitment wherever possible despite administrative limitations.

Calling for modern reforms in education, Sakina Itoo stressed the importance of introducing subjects like Artificial Intelligence and Horticulture to make students self-reliant and job ready. She said education must move beyond traditional curricula to meet present day challenges.

The Minister also reiterated a zero tolerance policy against harassment and misconduct in educational institutions. She said strict action is taken in cases involving safety violations or inappropriate behaviour to ensure a secure atmosphere for students.

She further urged educational institutions to play a proactive role in shaping responsible youth and creating a safer and progressive academic environment across J&K.
