SKIMS Organises Grand Round on ” Renal Transplantation 

Defining New Parameters in the Transplantation field

Srinagar : The department of Urology & Kidney Transplant Unit SKIMS held a grand round presentation in the SKIMS auditorium and shared the 25 year experience of Renal Transplantation at SKIMS.

The recent data of 285 patients who have successfully been operated for kidney transplant during the last seven years was showcased/ presented.

Director SKIMS & EOSG Prof. Mohd. Ashraf Ganie congratulated the department for successfully leading the Renal Transplantation Program with latest techniques and excellent results.

He said administration is committed to enhance these services. KTU SKIMS, a leading Renal Transplant Centre in North India is hugely benefitting the patients suffering from chronic diseases and is defining new parameters in the transplantation field.

Prof. & Head Department of Urology & KTU SKIMS while highlighting the functioning of the department stated that the SKIMS started a Renal Transplant Program in 1999 as a small program that got established with time marked with huge success.

From the last 10 years the Program has been running regularly with the establishment of State of art Kidney Transplant Unit with excellent results, and till date more than 750 renal Transplants have been done, he added.

The latest techniques incorporated for better patient care delivery have not only enhanced the performance & patient satisfaction but has brought the department to the global map with excellent results in renal Transplantation.

The experts shared that with the introduction of Swap Transplant the department is defining future courses in renal transplantation. Recently two swap transplants were conducted (two pairs) and maintained that the swap transplant comes with the advantage of mitigating the issue of limited donors, a major step to address the huge deficiency of donors.

Microsurgical anastamosis for small renal arteries using magnification and Laproscopic Donor Nephrectomy are other latest modifications adopted for improved results.

The technique of Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy comes with the advantage of less hospital stay, small incision, less handling of kidney , good artery and vien length with overall improved results.

Prof. Arif Hamid, HOD Urology & KTU acknowledged the pivotal role of the former HOD Urology, Prof. Salim wani who he said was a frontrunner in establishing the Renal Transplant Program at SKIMS.

He also lauded the extraordinary role of Nephrology department including former HOD, Prof. M. Ashraf Bhat, Prof. Imtiyaz A. Wani, Prof. Muzaffar Maqsood Wani, Anaesthesia team headed by Prof. Showkat Gurcoo and Dr. Khalid Parvaiz Sofi, Department of Immunology including former Head Prof. Zaffar Amin Shah & Dr. Roohi Rasool for the success of the program. Besides he appreciated the role of all clinical and para clinical departments & Nursing Department with their present and former faculty & staff.

He thanked all the Faculty and Residents staff of Urology department, technical & paramedical staff of Urology OT, Urology Ward, and KTU for their unwavering support through their dedicated services.

Prof. Arif thanked the current administration for constant support & prioritising the Renal Transplantation at SKIMS and making concerted efforts to upgrade the infrastructure and other latest facilities, including the establishment of cadaveric transplant programme in the near future.
