Srinagar, Feb 15: Senior advocate and Supreme Court lawyer Ashok Bhan has appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging him to confront the “complexities” of Kashmir. He said the Kashmir Policy and Strategy Group is ready to provide support for initiatives aimed at resolving the root causes of conflict and fostering a shared vision of peace and prosperity for all Kashmiris.
In a letter addressed to the Home Minister, Bhan said the Kashmir “problem” has a layered nature, obscured by distorted historical narratives, self-serving myths, and conflicting political interests.
“Yet, amidst this complexity, the current government has demonstrated a sincere commitment to fostering an environment conducive to peace and progress, aiming to break the cycle of violence perpetuated by adversaries,” he said.
Bhan underscored the significance of restoring legitimate democracy in Kashmir, saying that such a move aligns with the constitutional ethos of the nation and could pave the way for synchronized national and state elections.
Acknowledging the historical and social context of the Kashmir Valley, Ashok said the past conflicts had an enduring impact on its people. He condemned the displacement of indigenous religious minorities and the loss of innocent lives at the hands of non-state actors and terror groups.
Highlighting the Kashmir Policy and Strategy Group’s advocacy for dialogue and societal healing, the senior advocate said it is imperative to foster peace, justice and inclusivity in the region. There is an urgent need to end the cycle of societal devastation and promote reconciliation and social cohesion, he said.
Despite significant progress in combating terrorism, Bhan said it remains a persistent challenge, fueled by external support. He cited recent incidents in Poonch, Rajouri, and Srinagar as stark reminders of this ongoing threat.
He also drew attention to the plight of the Kashmiri Pandit community, who were forcibly displaced in 1990, describing their plight as a dark chapter in Kashmir’s history. There is an urgent need for their repatriation, he stressed.
The SC lawyer urged the government to prioritize the restoration of communal harmony and respect for constitutional principles. He said the Kashmir Policy and Strategy Group is committed to supporting initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace and reconciliation in Kashmir.
