Budgam, July 20: The Municipal Committee Chadoora has undertaken measures to keep water bodies pollution-free by carrying out a cleanliness drive in the Doodh Ganga Nallah.
Mohammad Ismail, Executive Officer of the Municipal Committee Chadoora, informed Rising Kashmir that a two-kilometre cleanliness drive was carried out in the Doodh Ganga Nallah.
The waste collected from the Nallah was transported to the Solid Waste Management Centre, he said, adding that weekly cleanliness drives are conducted to maintain the purity of water bodies.
“In addition to these cleanliness drives, we are collecting waste from the doorsteps of residents daily, including waste generated from households and markets,” he said.
Ismail said this waste is then shifted to the Solid Waste Management Centre, where it is scientifically segregated using installed machinery. “This systematic approach ensures effective waste management and contributes to the overall cleanliness of the area,” he said.
Meanwhile, an official at the municipal committee said that keeping water bodies pollution-free is crucial for the environment and public health. He said that nallahs, often neglected and prone to accumulating waste, require regular cleanliness drives to maintain their ecological balance and usability.
He called for educating the public about the impact of waste on water bodies, encouraging participation and responsible disposal habits. “There is a need to mobilise volunteers to physically remove debris, plastics and other pollutants from nallahs,” he suggested, adding that properly segregating collected waste ensures recyclables are reused, while hazardous materials are safely disposed of.
The official suggested installing trash traps, enhancing sewage treatment and implementing strict regulations to prevent pollution. He said involving residents, schools and businesses fosters a sense of ownership and long-term commitment to keeping nallahs clean.
“By undertaking these measures, we can safeguard nallahs as valuable ecosystems, promote biodiversity, preserve water quality and enhance the overall quality of life for everyone dependent on these water bodies,” he added.
