Srinagar, Sept 07: Authorities on Sunday seized around 340 kilograms of unlabeled meat in Aalikadal area of Srinagar after intercepting a consignment transported from the city airport. Samples have been sent for laboratory testing, while officials have denied claims that the seized meat was rotten.
An official from the Food Safety Department told reporters that after seizing the unlabeled meat, they received a call between 10:30 am and 10:45 am from the Deputy Commissioner, State Sales and Taxes, stationed at the airport’s air cargo section. The information passed on by FSD employees indicated that a consignment of meat without proper labelling was present in the air cargo.
“Acting on the information, our team waited outside the airport and intercepted an auto-rickshaw after it was loaded with the consignment. On inspection, it was found to contain approximately 340 kilograms of unlabeled meat,” the official told reporters.
The consignment, reportedly belonging to a resident of Aalikadal, was found to be without labelling, date of manufacture, details of processing, packaging, or billing, raising concerns about its quality and traceability.
Denying reports that the seized meat was rotten, officials clarified that the stock was not spoiled but lacked proper labelling and documentation, which violates food safety norms. “We have taken samples for testing to ensure public safety,” the official added.
Meanwhile, the concerned licence has been cancelled.
Authorities have assured strict action under food safety laws to prevent such violations in the future.
