Pulwama, July 24: A drive to destroy wild cannabis has been going on in Pampore Tehsil of south Kashmir Pulwama district for the last many days. The joint drive is carried out by authorities from the revenue, horticulture and agriculture departments with the support of Municipal Committee Pampore.
Officials said that during the drive, wild plants of cannabis growing along roadsides and canals have been destroyed at Karnabal, Samboora, Patalbagh, Galander and adjoining areas.
Tehsildar Pampore, Zubair Ahmad Bhat, said the drive has been going on for the past ten days.
“During the drive, the wild crop of cannabis was destroyed on more than 100 kanals of land,” he said, adding that the drive will continue till the entire area falling under Tehsil Pampore is cleared off from wild cannabis.
The Tehsildar also appealed to the residents to play their part in this drive. “It is my humble request to residents of Pampore Tehsil that they should destroy wild cannabis growing in their surroundings themselves as a part of their moral responsibility,” he said.
The local residents have appreciated the authorities for carrying a drive to destroy wild cannabis growing along roadsides, canals and other sorts of uncultivated land.
The narcotic substance is abused by many and addiction causes hallucinations, depersonalization, paranoia and other features of psychosis.
