Srinagar : The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Srinagar has announced its annual Craft Research Documentation, a cornerstone academic project scheduled to take place from the 17th to the 27th of September. During this period, students of the fifth semester from all departments will immerse themselves in various artisan communities across the region to document, understand, and promote the country's rich craft heritage. This intensive, field-based initiative is designed to provide students with practical, hands-on knowledge of traditional crafts. The project's primary objective is to bridge the gap between theoretical design education and the living traditions of master artisans. By engaging directly with craftspeople, It helps  students  to gain invaluable insights that will inform their future work in the fashion and textile industries, with a particular focus on promoting sustainable and culturally rooted design. The research will encompass a wide array of celebrated crafts from Jammu & Kashmir, including Pashmina weaving, Kani shawl, Walnut wood carving, Papier-mâché, Copperware, Sozni and Tilla embroidery, Willow Wicker, and Tweed, among others. During this process the students learn and observe craft processes at a foundational level. The final output of their research will be a multi-format documentation aimed at both archival and promotional purposes. This includes a comprehensive printed document, a professional video documentary, and engaging short-form digital content, such as reels, to share the story of these crafts with a wider, global audience. This initiative underscores NIFT Srinagar's commitment to nurturing a new generation of designers who are not only innovative but also deeply connected to India's artisanal heritage.
