Ganderbal, Jan 16: In a historic turn of events, the Zojila Pass, a crucial link connecting Ladakh Union Territory and Jammu and Kashmir, has defied the typical winter closure trend, remaining open for vehicular movement in the challenging conditions of January.
Unlike the previous year when the pass was closed on January 6, 2023, this unprecedented development marks a breakthrough in maintaining connectivity during peak winter. “It’s Chilai Kalan, and we are still heading towards Ladakh; we saw it for the first time in history,” exclaimed a driver en route to Ladakh.
Amidst the chilly winter days, drivers expressed surprise and joy at the Zojila Road being open for traffic. “This is good news for us; we are earning continuously, sustaining our livelihood,” one driver remarked.
The region experienced less snowfall this year, contributing to the pass’s operational status. Locals noted that, despite the usual accumulation of 5 to 6 feet of snowfall in the area, the road remains remarkably clear.
Tashi Gyalson, Chairman/CEC of LAHDC Leh, commended the relentless efforts of Project Vijayak & Project Beacon, led by the Border Roads Organization (BRO), and the unwavering commitment of Ladakh Police personnel. Their dedication ensured smooth vehicular movements despite severe winter adversities.
Expressing gratitude, CEC Gyalson credited the close monitoring and timely oversight of the Ladakh Administration, led by Lt. Governor Retd. Brig. Dr. B.D Mishra, for this exceptional accomplishment. He emphasized the pivotal role played by proactive governance in maintaining the pass’s operational status.
Highlighting the tangible benefits for the people of Ladakh, CEC Gyalson underscored the significance of the Union Territory’s formation. The open Zoji-la pass ensures convenient access to daily essentials, even in the harshest winter conditions, showcasing the transformative impact of improved connectivity.
As the lifeline of the region remains accessible, CEC Gyalson urged all commuters and transporters to exercise caution and prioritize safety while navigating the snow-covered roads.
