Ganderbal, Dec 26: The renowned hill station in Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, witnessed a record-breaking influx of tourists in 2024.
From January to November, an astounding 814,708 visitors were recorded, including 15,091 international tourists, 760,309 domestic travelers, and 39,309 local visitors, setting a new benchmark for the region’s tourism sector.
The surge in tourism gained momentum throughout the year, with the first four months alone attracting 91,586 visitors, including 3,079 international tourists. By the end of October, Sonamarg had hosted 760,000 visitors, including 14,000 foreigners, and the numbers spiked further in November after the region experienced a snowfall, enhancing its winter charm.
Traditionally, Sonamarg’s tourism was limited to the summer months. However, the ongoing construction of major infrastructure projects, such as the Z-Morh Tunnel, has transformed the destination into a year-round attraction. Though the Z-Morh Tunnel is not yet officially operational, it has been opened for traffic during periods of heavy snowfall, providing access to Sonamarg even in winter. Once fully operational, the tunnel, which connects Gagangeer to Sonamarg, will ensure uninterrupted access throughout the year.
Previously, the route to Sonamarg would close for four months every winter due to heavy snowfall and dangerous road conditions, particularly in areas like Hung and Haji Qabar. Locals hope that the Z-Morh Tunnel will soon be inaugurated, permanently eliminating seasonal disruptions.
The surge in tourism has been a lifeline for local businesses and the broader tourism industry, which had been struggling over the past few years. Shopkeepers and hoteliers are elated with the increased footfall and have lauded the tourism department for its effective promotional campaigns.
One local shopkeeper said, “This year has been remarkable. The flow of tourists has surpassed previous records, and we are grateful for the government’s efforts in promoting Sonamarg.”
The development of the Z-Morh and Zojila tunnels has been pivotal in redefining Sonamarg’s tourism potential. While the Zojila Tunnel is still under construction, the Z-Morh Tunnel’s partial functionality has already provided a significant boost by keeping the region accessible during challenging weather conditions.
Tourism stakeholders are urging the government to expedite the official inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel and intensify promotional activities to sustain the momentum. With continued efforts, Sonamarg is poised to cement its status as one of Kashmir’s top year-round destinations, attracting even more travellers from across the globe.
