Srinagar, Aug 11: The first phase of a walkway along Wular Lake, modeled after Srinagar’s Boulevard Road along Dal Lake, is expected to be completed by the end of October, officials said.
The Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) has undertaken this project to give Wular Lake, Asia’s second-largest freshwater lake located in Bandipora, a major face-lift.
The initiative will create an “eco-friendly” boulevard around the lake’s perimeter. The project is part of broader efforts to transform the area into a major attraction, including the construction of a walkway from Garoora to Banyari, which is now nearing completion.
“The new walkway and planned activities will make the lake more accessible and appealing to everyone,” a local shopkeeper told Rising Kashmir.
Wular Lake, known for its vast size and historical significance, has always been central to life in Bandipora. “Wular isn’t just a lake; it’s part of our history. Seeing it receive the attention it deserves feels like a new beginning for Bandipora,” remarked another local.
One of the project’s highlights is the introduction of water sports, which is expected to draw adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts. “I’m excited to see families and tourists engaging in water sports. It’s going to bring new energy to the lake,” said a young local entrepreneur.
The WUCMA’s vision for Wular Lake focuses on more than just beautification; it also emphasizes promoting sustainable tourism and preserving the area’s ecological balance.
“We are committed to developing Wular Lake in a way that respects its natural environment while also providing economic benefits to the local community,” an official told Rising Kashmir.
He said that the Delta Park at Baniyari and Dyke Park at Garoora are also under progress and the installation of water fountains near vantage are going to be completed this year along with extending the walkway by another 2.5 kms upto Vantage from Naz Nallah and developing Watlab, Adipora-Ninglee cycle track.
The transformation is anticipated to position Wular Lake as a top destination for visitors seeking peace and natural beauty in the heart of Kashmir, he added.
