Baramulla, Oct 10: The Department of Psychiatry at Government Medical College Baramulla, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare Baramulla, conducted an impactful academic programme in the college auditorium on Tuesday to observe World Mental Health Day.
The event kicked off with a compelling workshop on ‘Stress Management in day-to-day life,’ actively engaging students and employees from health, education, and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS).
Distinguished speakers included Dr Zahoor Raina, ADC Baramulla; Professor Ruby Reshi, Principal GMC Baramulla; Dr Parvaiz Masoodi, Medical Superintendent GMC Baramulla; Dr Tajamul Hussain, Head of Psychiatry, and Professor Tariq Chalkoo, Vice Principal GDC Boys Baramulla.
Special recognition was extended to participants who underwent training at the Department of Psychiatry GMC Baramulla over the past year.
A crucial panel discussion on ‘Drug Abuse,’ featuring SSP Baramulla, Amod Nagpure IPS, and other dignitaries, facilitated an interactive dialogue on this pressing issue.
The overarching theme for World Mental Health Day 2023, “Mental Health is the Universal Human Right,” was emphasised throughout the event.
ADC Baramulla, and Dr. Zahoor Ahmad Raina, highlighted the pivotal role of mental health in societal progress, saying that mentally healthy individuals are fundamental contributors to societal betterment.
Professor Ruby Reshi emphasised in her address that mental health is a universal human right, requiring access to quality care, eradication of stigma, and the creation of supportive environments for emotional well-being.
Dr Parvez Masoodi commended the Psychiatry Department for its dedicated efforts in addressing mental health issues and conducting vital outreach programmes for citizen well-being. He spotlighted the department’s achievements, including the establishment of a 6-bedded IPD facility, Addiction Treatment Facility (ATF), district-wide awareness and mental health camps, and comprehensive training for Drug De-addiction Centre staff at PHC Singhpora, among others.
The event concluded with the felicitation of panellists and dignitaries, followed by a vote of thanks by Dr Tajamul Hussain, Head of Psychiatry at GMC Baramulla.
