Ganderbal, Jan 30: District Hospital Ganderbal Thursday observed World Leprosy Day with a focus on raising awareness about leprosy and reducing the stigma associated with the disease.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Ganderbal, Dr. Bashir Ahmad Khan, delivered a comprehensive lecture on leprosy, its prevalence in the district, and the importance of early detection and treatment. Dr. Syed Zahid also elaborated on various aspects of the disease, including its symptoms, transmission, and management.
The event was attended by Medical Superintendent DH Ganderbal, Dr. Nighat Yasmeen; RMO, Dr. Syed Arshid; and officials from the District Programme Management Unit (DPMU) Ganderbal.
On the occasion, ASHAs and FMPHWs were urged to expedite community-level screening efforts and actively participate in spreading awareness to eliminate stigma and discrimination against individuals affected by leprosy.
As a gesture of support, medical kits, shoes, and blankets were distributed to cured leprosy-affected persons in a dignified manner by CMO Ganderbal.
Notably, the Sparsh Awareness Leprosy Programme will be conducted in District Ganderbal from January 30 to February 13, 2025, focusing on public education and outreach to further strengthen the fight against leprosy
