World Environment Day: BGSBU students informed of ‘critical importance’ of forests

Rajouri, June 05: World Environment Day was jointly celebrated by the Environmental Sciences, Centre for Biodiversity Studies, Department of Mathematical Sciences and NSS Wing, BGSB University, Rajouri. This year’s theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution” which is set in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. 
The Day was observed to raise awareness and to make people aware on plastic matters as the material is slowly seeping into our oceans, soil and forest and causing irreparable damage. The significance of this year’s theme is to highlight the role of individual’s efforts to reduce plastic cover in different types of ecosystems. An online lecture and a quiz competition were organized to celebrate the event in which the staff, scholars and students of various departments of BGSBU participated. 
In his message, Professor Akbar Masood, Vice Chancellor, BGSBU applauded the efforts of the Departments and University NSS wing for taking leads in organizing such activities to raise awareness about the significant conservation issues related to environment. 
The online lecture was delivered by Dr. Shreekar Pant, Coordinator, Centre for Biodiversity Studies in which he emphasized on the importance of individuals efforts in making conserving our mother earth. He emphasized the critical importance of the forests for our planet and how sustainably we can make our relationship with the wildlife species and how we can mitigate the impact of climate change through protecting our forest wealth. 
After the online lecture, a pledge was also administered to raise Environmental awareness. In the end, Dr Zaheer Abbas, Head, Department of Mathematical Sciences, and Dr. Pervaiz Abdullah, Coordinator NSS, in their concluding remarks summed up the true meaning of adopting and changing lifestyle for better environment and tomorrow.
