Hiranagar, Dec 02: Red Ribbon Club & Eco-Club of GLDM Degree College Hiranagar on Friday organised poster making competition, symposium and an awareness rally to commemorate World Aids Day 2022. The theme of the AIDS day for the year 2022 was “Equalise”.
Students very enthusiastically participated in all the events for World AIDS Day designated on 1 December every year since 1988. The day is celebrated as an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease.
The first activity of the day was held in the form of poster making competition in which total of 20 participants participated, out of which 1st position was bagged by Sia Kumari of Semester III, 2nd position by Rawani Jasrotia of Semester III and 3rd position by Komal Sharma of Semester V. The competition was adjudged by Dr Devinder Kour (HOD, Department of Education), Prof Nidhi (HOD, Botany), Dr Anil Kumar (Assistant Prof. Department of Botany).
In the second part of the programme, students presented their views on the theme “END INEQUALITIES, END AIDS” wherein all the participants exchange their knowledge and ideas related to AIDS. They also discussed that HIV stigma is a negative attitude and belief about people with HIV and that it is the prejudice that comes with labeling an individual as part of a group that is believed to be socially unacceptable.
Dr Pragya Khanna, Principal of the college, in her message asked the students to stay alert, active and notice and record everything around. She encouraged the students to reap the maximum benefit out of such programmes. She sensitized the students that the lack of information and awareness combined with outdated beliefs lead people to fear getting HIV and talking openly about HIV can help normalize the subject.
