Budgam, Mar 19: Following two recent incidents in Samsan village of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, where a minor girl was tragically mauled to death by a leopard and another minor boy was injured, the wildlife department has taken proactive steps to capture the wild animal alive and ensure the safety of the villagers.
Mohammad Altaf, the DFO (Wildlife Warden), informed Rising Kashmir that additional trapping cages have been installed in Samsan village, located in the Khansahib tehsil. He said plans are underway for a drone survey and the installation of night cameras to effectively monitor the leopard’s movements.
“A wildlife department camp has been established in the village, operating 24×7, and efforts are being made to augment manpower in the area to aid in the capture of the leopard alive,” he said.
Altaf urged the villagers to adhere to the advisory provided by the wildlife department for their safety. An awareness camp will also be organised to educate the local community about the situation and how to respond in case of a leopard sighting, he said.
In the event of any leopard sighting in the village, the DFO urged residents to immediately contact the wildlife department to facilitate the safe capture of the leopard without endangering human lives.
