Srinagar, Aug 15: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reaffirmed the Jammu and Kashmir administration’s commitment to preventing the neighbouring country from rekindling terrorism in the region.
Addressing the 78th Independence Day gathering at Bakshi Stadium amid rains, Sinha called on the people of Jammu to support efforts to eliminate terrorism.
“The new wave of development, increased voter turnout in elections, and almost complete cessation of indoctrination of locals have frustrated the biggest sponsor of terrorism, our neighbouring country. They are struggling for even two meals a day and now want to spread unrest in the Jammu region by sending foreign terrorists who have carried out heinous acts,” Sinha remarked.
Paying tribute to the brave officers, soldiers, and civilians who lost their lives, Sinha said, “We have given a free hand to the J&K Police and security forces and want to assure the people of Jammu & Kashmir and the nation that we have intensified our efforts to crush terror. The people of Jammu have fought against terrorism with vigor before, and this time too, they will help in ending it.”
This year, five Shaurya Chakras were awarded to J&K Police officers. On the eve of Independence Day, the police force was honoured with 31 Medals for Gallantry, 17 Medals for Meritorious Service, and 2 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service. “Their actions reflect the highest standards of commitment and valor,” Sinha stated.
Addressing the issue of narco-terrorism, Sinha emphasised a multi-pronged strategy involving comprehensive enforcement, coordination, the establishment of special courts for the trial of offenses, and robust rehabilitation programs. “I am confident that through these strategies, we shall not only disrupt the supply chain but also address the root causes of addiction,” he asserted.
“Their actions reflect the highest standards of commitment and valour and their recognition at the national level not only honours their individual heroism but also highlights the collective strength and resilience of the Jammu and Kashmir Police force,” he said.
Highlighting five significant achievements in J&K over the past five years, Sinha said, “The stigma of discrimination that has been plaguing this land for seven decades has been washed away. We have built a skilled Jammu & Kashmir, paving the way for a self-reliant Jammu & Kashmir. The gap between resources and aspirations of citizens has been bridged.”
He noted that the UT administration is dedicated to empowering the poor, the disadvantaged, and the marginalized. “Jammu and Kashmir of today is a testament to these transformative efforts, standing firm as a symbol of progress for the entire country,” Sinha added.
Sinha acknowledged the fiscal management challenges faced by J&K due to externally sponsored terrorism but emphasized the administration’s efforts to improve revenue, reduce wasteful expenditure, and enhance fiscal transparency. “The GDP of J&K has doubled from ₹1.17 lakh crore in 2017 to ₹2.45 lakh crore in 2023-24. The GDP is expected to touch ₹2.63 lakh crore in 2024-25,” he said.
On agriculture, Sinha highlighted the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP) and J&K Competitiveness Improvement in Agriculture & Allied Sectors (JKCIP) initiatives, which aim to revolutionize agriculture in J&K over the next five years. “These initiatives would double the contribution of the agricultural sector towards GDP, ensuring livelihood security for 13 lakh farmer families and creating 2.87 lakh jobs,” Sinha explained.
Regarding industrial development, Sinha announced that J&K has received 6,934 investment proposals worth ₹1.26 lakh crore with a projected employment potential for 4.74 lakh people. “The New Industrial Scheme, ending in September, will be extended for at least one year,” he assured.
Sinha also noted a significant increase in foreign tourists following the successful G20 Tourism Working Group meeting. “Foreign tourists have increased by 300%, enhancing the region’s global profile,” he said.
In healthcare, Sinha stated that the administration has made significant strides, including the implementation of Universal Health Insurance Coverage and the establishment of AIIMS in Jammu and Kashmir. “AIIMS Kashmir is expected to be completed by November 2025,” he said, adding that 85.50 lakh golden cards have been issued, providing treatments amounting to ₹2,334 crore.
On education, Sinha emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir is dedicated to becoming the educational hub of the country, with 51 new degree colleges established and initiatives like “Design Your Degree” enhancing the educational landscape.
“Jammu and Kashmir is on a historic journey towards peace and progress. Let us work with dedication to build a prosperous and unified region,” Sinha stated.
Later, the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, hosted an ‘At Home’ reception on the 78th Independence Day today.
On the occasion, the Lt Governor interacted with the family members of martyrs, freedom fighters, ex-Servicemen, achievers and citizens of the Union Territory and exchanged Independence Day greetings.
