India is on a developmental journey, prioritizing the welfare of every citizen through government schemes. The ongoing Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra in collaboration with IIMC Jammu is dedicated to saturating these schemes, ensuring benefits reach every individual, especially at the grassroots level. Jammu and Kashmir, an integral part of this endeavor, has witnessed remarkable progress over the last four years, particularly in providing water connections to both hilly and plain areas. In 2019, around 7.82 lakh houses in JK had water connections, a number that has surged to an impressive 14 lakh houses due to the government’s concentrated efforts. Noteworthy is the success of the Water Supply Scheme in Hergawas, catering to two villages, Gamdooru and Hergawas, exemplifying the mission’s commitment to reaching remote areas. Along the Line of Control, dreams have materialized as drinking water through pipes becomes a reality under the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission,’ marking a historic change in daily life for villagers. Positive impacts are felt in places like Baltan, Batlan, and Nilphan Top Village, where clean tap water has ended a 50-year wait. Recent milestones reveal that Jammu and Kashmir has surpassed 75% coverage under the Jal Jeevan Mission, providing clean tap water to 14,02,693 rural households out of 18,69,821. The government’s continuous efforts are reflected in the approval of 102 new Water Supply Schemes, emphasizing a participatory approach and achieving the ‘High Achievers’ category nationally. With 3300 planned schemes under the Jal Jeevan Mission at an estimated cost of Rs. 12,975.00 crore, the UT is making significant strides in providing safe drinking water. The ‘Har Ghar Jal Certification’ process by Gram Panchayats ensures transparency, creating awareness and promoting the importance of tap water connectivity. In conclusion, Jammu and Kashmir’s journey under the Jal Jeevan Mission is a remarkable tale of progress and transformation. The commitment to reaching every citizen is evident in continuous efforts to expand water supply schemes, provide tap connections, and enhance the quality of life for all. As the mission progresses, collective efforts ensure a future where access to clean and safe drinking water is a reality for every household in Jammu and Kashmir.
