Srinagar, Jun 10: National Conference (NC) president and former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday urged pilgrims to consider travelling via the newly inaugurated Srinagar–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Vande Bharat Express for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, calling it a “symbol of progress” for the region.
Describing the high-speed train as a major milestone in J&K’s development, Dr Abdullah said such infrastructure projects pave the way for broader economic growth and national integration. He made the remarks while travelling aboard the train, accompanied by senior NC leaders, MLAs, Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, and his grandsons Zahir and Zamir Abdullah.
Speaking to reporters during the journey, the NC chief congratulated Indian Railways for bringing modern transport to Kashmir and described the Vande Bharat Express as a “remarkable gift” for the people. He said the service would ease the travel hardships pilgrims face during the yatra and significantly improve connectivity between Jammu and the valley.
“With the Amarnath Yatra approaching, I urge devotees to take advantage of this safe, reliable, and fast train service. It’s not just about convenience, it reflects confidence in J&K’s potential,” he said.
Dr Farooq highlighted the broader benefits of the train link, saying it would enhance trade, tourism, and connectivity. “Every new rail link strengthens people-to-people ties and brings us closer to the dream of an inclusive and prosperous India,” he added.
He boarded the train at Nowgam Railway Station in Srinagar and was received in Katra by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and Jammu NC President Rattan Lal Gupta.
“My heart is overwhelmed, and my eyes teared up seeing Kashmir finally connected through a national rail link. I salute the engineers and workers who made this possible,” he said.
The former CM described the train as a game-changer, especially for the horticulture sector, as it would allow faster transportation of produce to markets across India, including Kanyakumari, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bihar.
“This train offers an advantage over road and air travel, particularly during times of road closures and costly airfares. It will save people from such ordeals,” he said.
Dr Abdullah expressed hope that pilgrims from across the country will use the new facility in large numbers during the upcoming yatra. “It will help boost both religious tourism and the overall economy,” he said.
Sharing his experience on social media, NC leader and chief spokesperson, Tanvir Sadiq wrote on X: “Took our first train ride from Srinagar to Katra—truly impressed! The journey crosses the iconic Anji bridge and passes through stunning tunnels. A remarkable experience.”
CM’s sons, Zahir and Zamir Abdullah, also shared their excitement, praising the comfort, speed, and service onboard. “It felt like a different world. We’re proud to see such services reach Kashmir,” Zahir said.
Recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Vande Bharat Express has generated public enthusiasm for its world-class amenities and the boost it promises to tourism and economic activity.
The train connects Srinagar to the revered shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi in Katra, offering a safer, faster, and more efficient travel option for pilgrims and general travellers alike.
Meanwhile, the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is scheduled to commence in the Kashmir Himalayas on July 03, 2025.
