Kargil, Sept 22: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh and Chancellor of the University, Kavinder Gupta, on Monday said the Union Territory’s lone university was aligning its vision with the National Education Policy (NEP) by giving priority to skill development and entrepreneurship.
Speaking at the second Convocation Ceremony of the University of Ladakh, held at TFC Biamathang, the LG said the institution was committed to preparing students for self-reliance. “The goal is to nurture employers rather than employees,” he remarked, adding that new courses were being introduced in line with the aspirations of Ladakh’s youth.
The Convocation witnessed a landmark as the University conferred its first-ever Ph.D. degree. Dr. Tsering Choldan from Kidmang was awarded a doctorate in Political Science for his research on the geo-strategic relevance of Ladakh in India’s national security. Thanking the administration, he said the University had enabled scholars from modest backgrounds to pursue advanced research within the region.
Gold medals and degrees were also presented to meritorious students. Among them was Fatima Sourqa from Suru Valley, who topped in the Master of Tourism and Travel Management course. She said Ladakh now offered avenues for higher education at par with other regions of the country.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Saket Kushwaha noted that since its establishment in 2019, the University had emerged as a centre for research, innovation and sustainable development.
The event was attended by senior officials, academics, and community representatives, including University of Kashmir Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan and CEC Kargil Dr. Jaffer Akhoon, MP Haneefa Jan, CS Ladakh and other dignitaries.
