Srinagar, Dec 26: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated on Thursday that the provision of 24-hour electricity in Jammu and Kashmir will be possible only after achieving 100% metering in the region.
Speaking to reporters, Omar acknowledged that electricity continues to be a major concern, with unscheduled power cuts occurring due to high demand and pressure on the system. “The solution lies in metering. Once we achieve 100% metering, we can ensure a reliable, 24-hour electricity supply,” he said.
Omar further assured that the government is actively working to address the issues faced by the people, acknowledging that while some challenges take time to resolve, they remain committed to finding solutions.
Discussing the current winter conditions, the Chief Minister noted that the season has been particularly harsh, marked by extreme cold and dryness. “We pray for snowfall to break the drought,” he remarked, adding that the severe cold has led to frozen water taps, making water supply a challenging task.
On infrastructure development, Omar highlighted the rapid progress of the railway project that will connect Jammu and Kashmir to the rest of India. “We are eagerly awaiting the day when people can travel conveniently by train,” he said.
Regarding healthcare, Omar acknowledged improvements in the region’s hospitals but recognized complaints from patients about staff shortages during nighttime hours. “We will address this issue promptly,” he assured.
The Chief Minister also addressed the impact of the lack of snowfall on tourism, emphasizing that snow is crucial for attracting visitors. “Snow is essential for tourism. We are working to position Jammu and Kashmir as a year-round tourist destination,” he said, expressing optimism for a successful and prosperous New Year.
