Srinagar, Jan 30: The Postgraduate Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, in collaboration with the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists & Leprologists (IADVL) J&K branch, organised a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme to observe World Leprosy Day.
Themed “Unified Call for Dignity & Healing,” the event aimed to raise awareness, update medical professionals on recent advancements in leprosy management, and reinforce the commitment to eliminating the disease. The theme emphasised a unified approach to addressing leprosy, promoting dignity, and ensuring healing for affected individuals.
The CME was attended by dermatologists, medical faculty, postgraduate students, and healthcare professionals. Renowned experts delivered insightful lectures on epidemiology, early diagnosis, leprosy reactions, treatment modalities, and the stigma associated with the disease.
Principal of GMC Srinagar, Prof. Dr Iffat Hassan, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to leprosy control initiatives and commended the Dermatology Department for organising the CME. She urged all stakeholders to renew their commitment to leprosy control through awareness, education, and community engagement, stressing the need for compassionate, patient-centred care.
Dr Yasmeen Jabeen, Head of the Department of Dermatology and President of IADVL J&K, highlighted the importance of continued education and awareness in eradicating leprosy. Other prominent speakers included Dr Shagufta Rather, Secretary IADVL J&K; Prof Seema Qayoom, Head of Dermatology at SKIMS Medical College; Prof Sheikh Manzoor and Prof Syed Mubashir, both former Presidents of IADVL J&K; Dr Anjum Afshan, State Leprosy Officer; as well as faculty members from the Departments of Dermatology and Microbiology at GMC Srinagar. The event concluded with an interactive session, reinforcing the importance of early intervention and patient-centred care.
