Abid BashirMumbai, Oct 07: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), internationally recognised by the United Nations for its advanced disaster management systems, has offered full support to the Jammu and Kashmir government to bolster technology-driven disaster response and urban resilience.Senior officials of the BMC’s Disaster Management Department (DMD) met a visiting J&K media delegation and offered collaboration on advanced technologies, mobile-based emergency applications and real-time alert systems tailored to the region’s terrain and climate. The BMC’s DMD, lauded by the UN for setting benchmarks in disaster preparedness, has developed an integrated framework using artificial intelligence, GIS mapping and data analytics, ensuring timely decision-making and smooth coordination among multiple civic agencies. In Mumbai, the BMC and DMD monitor weather alerts, floods, fires, and medical emergencies in real-time, coordinate rapid responses, run disaster drills and conduct community awareness programmes to minimise risks and save lives.Officials highlighted that Mumbai’s model, which links the police, fire brigade and health departments through a 24/7 central control room, could serve as a blueprint for Jammu and Kashmir. " All these facilities are available on one application, which guides people in times of disasters," they said."We are proud our work has been acknowledged globally, and we are eager to share our experience with J&K, which faces its own unique challenges," said a senior BMC-DMD official.Acknowledging Jammu and Kashmir’s efforts to enhance disaster response, BMC officials said they are ready to assist in capacity building, knowledge transfer and the introduction of technology suited to the region."We are always open to inter-state collaboration. Jammu and Kashmir faces diverse environmental and geographical challenges, and technology-driven systems with trained manpower can bring a major transformation," the official added.Chief Officer, DMD, Rashmee Lokhande assured full institutional support from BMC to the J&K government. In a significant gesture of partnership, BMC extended an open invitation to the Commissioners of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), besides other officials associated with the disaster management, to visit Mumbai. The visit will provide hands-on exposure to real-time disaster response systems, emergency communication, and urban resilience planning."Such exchanges are crucial to strengthening national preparedness. We would be delighted to host officials from Srinagar and Jammu and demonstrate how our systems work in real-time," a senior officer said. The interactive session concluded with both sides agreeing that inter-state collaboration, backed by technology and innovation, can play a vital role in saving lives and minimising losses during disasters. The BMC’s offer marks a new chapter in knowledge sharing between India’s financial capital and Jammu and Kashmir.
