Ramban, Jan 10: In a deadly accident, two brothers lost their lives when a truck they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge at Battery Chashma along the Ramban national highway.
The accident has devastated a family that had already lost a son in a road accident on the same stretch four years ago. With today’s mishap, the family lost all three siblings to road accidents in four years that too on the same stretch of the national highway.
Rohit Baskotra, SSP Traffic, national highway, Ramban, told Rising Kashmir that the accident occurred on Thursday around 10:30 am. A rescue operation was launched immediately, and by Friday afternoon, both bodies had been retrieved.
An official from District Hospital, Ramban said that the deceased have been identified as Danish Ahmed Khan (25) and Yasir Imtiyaz Khan (15), sons of Imtiyaz Ahmed Khan, residents of Chijhama, Baramulla.
Mohammad Ashraf, a resident of Chijhama and a neighbor of the family said that Danish was driving the truck, which was carrying a load of iron reportedly from Delhi.
He said that Yasir, a class 9 student, had been picked up by his brother in Amritsar, where he had been staying with his uncle for his studies. Ashraf recounted the family’s heartbreak. “Four years ago, their elder brother Mehraj Ahmed Khan (25) died in a road accident on this very stretch of the Banihal–Ramban highway. Now, two more brothers have lost their lives in the same area,” he said. He further added, “The family is left shattered. They have lost all three sons in road accidents, leaving behind only two teenage sisters and their grieving parents.”
