Srinagar, Jan 07: The Jammu and Kashmir’s Police in Doda on Sunday apprehended two notorious drug peddlers and have been booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) by the order of the Divisional Commissioner Jammu, officials said.
A police officer said that two most wanted notorious drug peddlers namely, Surinder Kumar son of Hans Raj resident of Chakrabhati Tehsil Bhalla and Mohd Sohail @ Sohail Ganja son of Mohd Aslam resident of Saraf Mohalla Bhaderwah have been booked under PSA (PITNDPS) for their active involvement in illicit drug trafficking and lodged in District Jail Bhaderwah under the order passed by the Divisional Commissioner Jammu.
“The activities of the offenders are highly detrimental and a serious threat to the society being involved in a number of FIRs registered in different Police Stations of DKR Range against them. It is mentionable here that Case FIR No. 76/2021 PS Batote, FIR No. 08/2022 PS Doda and No. 187/2023 PS Banihal, under relevant provisions of NDPS Act were registered against Surinder Kumar,” he said.
The official said that similarly Case FIR No. 87/2023 and FIR No. 162/2023 under relevant provisions of NDPS Act were registered against Mohd Sohail @ Sohail Ganja at Police Station Bhaderwah.
“Both the individuals being habitual offenders were a serious threat to the local youth and their detention under PSA will definitely act as deterrence to the criminals and drug smugglers still at large and will also save precious lives of a number of innocent youth of the locality,” he said.
The police official said that acting tough against drug peddlers, during the year-2023-24, Police has registered (24) FIRs against (30) offenders. Besides, (05) notorious drug peddlers have been detained under PSA (PITNDPS) so far. Besides, a number of individuals were detained under preventive custody for their involvement in drug selling/ addiction, he said.
“We have sought cooperation from the general public and has warned the drug smugglers to desist from this black trading and other criminal activities, else stringent action as warranted under law shall be taken against them which includes detention under PSA and also attachment of property of habitual offenders,” he added.
