Srinagar, May 04: Two terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in WanigamPayeenKreeri area of Baramulla district on Thursday and arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter, police said.
Police identified the slain terrorists as Shakir Majid Najar and Hanan Ahmad Seh, both residents of Shopian. They had joined terror ranks in March this year.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Vijay Kumar termed the operation a big success as the terrorists were planning to carry out a attack in the area. He congratulated the joint team of Police and security forces for conducting a successful operation without any collateral damage.
A police spokesman said acting on a specific input regarding the presence of terrorists in WanigamPayeen, Kreeri area of Baramulla, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, Army (29RR) and SSB (2nd Bn) in the said area.
“During the search operation, as the joint search party approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorist fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter,” he said.
The spokesman said both the slain terrorists had recently joined terrorist ranks and were planning to carry out a terrorist attack in the area, which was timely neutralized.
“Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including 01 AK-47 rifle and 01 Pistol were recovered from the site of the encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” he said.
Meanwhile in this regard, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and further investigation is in progress.
“People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at the encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” the spokesman said.
This is the second encounter in the last 24 hours in the Valley after a brief lull.
Two terrorists were killed when an encounter took place after the security forces foiled an infiltration bid near the Line of Control (LoC) in Machil sector of Kupwara district on May 3.
These encounters took place at a time when Kashmir is set to host the G20 meeting later this month. Security has been heightened across the Valley.
