Srinagar, Sept 30: Two unidentified Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) terrorists, planning to attack an Army recruitment rally, were killed in an eight-hour long encounter in Yadipora Pattan village of Baramulla district, police said on Friday.
Addressing the joint presser of Police, Army, and  SSB at 10 Sector RR headquarters Hyderbeigh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Baramulla, Rayees Mohammad Bhat said intelligence agencies on Friday morning shared a tip-off about the presence of terrorists in Baramulla’s Yadipora area.
“The area was cordoned off and the hiding terrorists opened fire on the search party. In the ensuing encounter, two terrorists were killed,” he said.
SSP Bhat said terrorists were planning to disrupt the Army’s Agniveer rally in the area.
“The terrorists were tasked to disrupt the Army rally and discourage youth from joining. However, the terrorists’ designs were foiled,” he said.
About recoveries, SSP Baramulla said an AKS74U rifle with three magazines and a pistol with a magazine were recovered from their possession.
The slain terrorists were identified as Yawar Shafi Bhat of Kalampora Pulwama and Aamir Hussain Bhat of Veshro Shopian. They had recently joined the terror ranks, police said.
As per Police records, both the killed terrorists were categorized terrorists and involved in several terror crime cases including attacks on Police/SFs and civilian killings.
The SSP said although the site of the encounter has been sanitized, the public is requested to avoid going in droves near the site and report any suspicious object to police immediately.
Meanwhile, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Vijay Kumar said the slain terrorists were affiliated to the JeM.
A police spokesman said joint teams of Police, Army 29 RR, and 2nd Bn SSB launched a cordon and search operation in the area in the wee hours.
“During searches the terrorists hiding in a residential house fired upon the search party, which was retaliated triggering off an encounter,” he said.
The spokesman said during the ensuing encounter which continued for 8 hours, both the terrorists were killed, whose identity is being ascertained.
“Incriminating materials including a cache of arms and ammunition have been recovered from the retrieved bodies,” he said.
In a separate operation, security forces engaged a group of hiding terrorists in a gunfight in Shopian’s Chitragam. The anti-terrorist operation was on till late Friday evening. There were no reports of any casualty.
A senior officer told Rising Kashmir that terrorists took advantage of darkness and fled away from the encounter site,” adding that they will be traced soon.
