Srinagar, June 12: In a harrowing turn of events, twin terrorist attacks rocked the Chattergala and GandohBhalessa areas of Doda district in the Jammu region, leaving seven security personnel wounded, including five Armymen.
Addressing the situation, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Jammu revealed, “Army and Police joint Naka has engaged terrorists in Chattargala area of Doda. Firefight is going on. In the first terrorist incident, 5 Army men and one J&K Police constable were injured.”
Another encounter ensued around 8:20 PM on Wednesday at Kota Top in Gandoh, Doda, stated ADGP Jammu Jain. “During the encounter at Kota Top, KerlooBhalessa, Gandoh, Constable Fareed Ahmed (No. 973/D), who was posted with the Special Operations Group (SOG) in Gandoh, sustained injuries,” he elaborated, noting the ongoing nature of the encounter.
Describing the events leading up to the encounters, DIG DKR Range Sridhar Patil explained, “A group of 3-4 terrorists has recently become active in the higher reaches of the area and attacked one of the MECP Nakas at Chattergalla Pass, a connecting point between Kathua and Doda districts.”
DIG Patil emphasized the prompt response of security forces, stating, “After witnessing suspicious movement, security forces opened fire on the terrorists, and the operation continued for more than an hour. During the operation, 5 Army jawans and one J&K Police constable were injured.”
Amidst the challenging terrain, efforts to trace the terrorists are ongoing, as mentioned by DIG Patil. “We are using drones and other deployment to trace them. Terrain is difficult in this area and the operation can take more time to neutralize the remaining terrorists,” he acknowledged.
As per police officials, around 8 pm, terrorists opened fire on a tin shed where the Army and police had set up a joint checkpoint at Chattergala, bordering the Sarthal area of Kathua district. Chattergala in Doda’sBhaderwah area and the adjoining Sarthal in Kathua district are renowned tourist destinations.
“Terrorists also launched a grenade at the checkpoint, prompting retaliation from security forces and police. The exchange of fire persisted until the early hours of Wednesday. Following the terrorists’ retreat, the injured soldiers and a special police officer (SPO) were evacuated to Bhaderwah hospital, later being transferred to the Army’s Command Hospital at Udhampur,” he said.
In response to the attack, security forces and police reinforcements were dispatched to Chattergala, approximately 35 km from Bhaderwah, for a thorough search operation. Authorities halted all vehicular movement towards Chattergala from Bhaderwah as a precautionary measure.
This attack closely followed a terrorist strike in the distant Saida village, situated in the plains of Kathua district, at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, during which a civilian was injured and police neutralized two terrorists in the area.
These incidents come amid heightened security efforts following an attack on a bus carrying pilgrims from the Shiv Khori temple to Katra in Reasi on Sunday. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, caused the bus to veer off the road and fall into a deep gorge, leaving nine dead and 38 injured.
