Empowerment of the tribals has become a reality in India and this makes it clear that the incumbent government at the center is reaching out to the tribal areas with its progressive policies meant to bring prosperity to this segment of Indian society. It is in this context that the meeting of the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Jual Oram with Vice-President of India,C. P. Radhakrishnan must be seen. During the meeting, the Vice-President was briefed on various initiatives undertaken by the Ministry for the welfare of the tribal population. The presentation covered efforts to secure tribal rights; measures to enhance education and health outcomes; scholarships for tribal students; programmes for the rejuvenation of tribal culture; livelihood schemes including financial assistance and promotion of traditional skills as enterprises; the Ministry’s plan to modernise and expand Eklavya Model Residential Schools nationwide; and key schemes such as the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, PM-JANMAN, and the Adi Karmayogi Abhiyan. The Vice-President was also apprised of targeted initiatives for the welfare of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), including measures to secure their habitat rights. The Vice-President appreciated the three-fold increase in the Ministry’s budget outlay over the last eleven years and emphasised the need to enhance access to quality higher education—including opportunities abroad—for tribal students. He underlined the importance of continuous academic support and monitoring, preventing school dropouts, and building stronger linkages between universities and schools to ensure smooth transition of tribal students into higher education. The Vice-President commended the Ministry’s focused efforts to address sickle cell anaemia among tribal communities and to bridge critical gaps in health infrastructure. He also urged the Ministry to highlight and popularise the forgotten heroes of various tribal communities and bring their contributions to national attention. Reiterating that the benefits of welfare schemes must reach all sections of the tribal population, the Vice-President stated that the vision of Viksit Bharat can be achieved only when the upliftment and well-being of the tribal community are fully ensured. Contribution of the tribals in the national well being and freedom struggle is well documented. Contribution of Birsa Munda for the freedom of India is a national legacy worth emulating and a continuous inspiration for our progeny to motivate them to hold the nation supreme. There is a need to make the tribal history as an integral part of the mainstream history as this aspect has been relegated to the background deliberately to wipe out the rich heritage of India.Subversion of the national ecosystem during the colonial rule and then its nurturing after the independence by the forces inimical to India in the political class damaged the national interests by ignoring the tribals who are aboriginal upholders of Indian culture and its Sanskritic traditions.Time has come to uphold the tribal culture and make them get their due in the national mainstream.Prime Minister Narendra Modi is indeed devising policies and outreach programs that are situating the tribals in the right perspective. In fact each Indian state and Ut must identify the tribal culture and showcase it so that an integral approach for the preservation of this rich legacy. Moreover, the universities must encourage research in this direction and make tribal history an important part of their curriculum either in sociology or history. It will open new avenues of tribal empowerment and enable the nation pay them their due.
