Jammu, Sept 30: All the traffic signals across Jammu City installed under the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), lying defunct for more than three months, will be made functional only after the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is completed. However, the date of completion of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is not clear. “We have floated tenders, but there are still some technical issues for making the traffic signals functional in the city,” SSP Traffic, Farooq Kaiser, informed Rising Kashmir. “The closure of the 4th Tawi Bridge is leading to main traffic congestion in the city”. Following heavy rainfall in the Jammu region, the city has experienced unprecedented traffic jams. The entire ITMS, installed under the Smart City Project, has become defunct, causing considerable inconvenience to commuters. Massive traffic snarls have become a daily occurrence across the city. The SSP said the traffic congestion is largely due to the closure of the 4th Tawi Bridge, washed-away roads at multiple locations, potholes throughout Jammu, and the non-functioning traffic lights. The situation worsened after the heavy rains on August 26, he added. Currently, not a single traffic signal in Jammu City is operational, leading to chaos and long jams, especially during peak hours.
