Qazigund, Oct 09: The Department of Traffic, Rural Kashmir, on Wednesday launched a special drive to challan several vehicles on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, specifically targeting traffic violators, especially truckers, in Qazigund.
An official said that the drive, aimed at curbing the menace of overloading and over-height vehicles, was a joint effort led by DySP Traffic Anantnag, Kulgam Qazigund, DTI Anantnag and Qazigund, along with concerned SOs, under the supervision of Ravineer Pal Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic, Rural Kashmir, at Qazigund on Wednesday.
He said that a number of trucks were challaned for various violations during the drive. These trucks frequently break down, causing long traffic halts and resulting in inconvenience for commuters and other vehicles on NH-44, leading to chaos and congestion.
“Furthermore, appropriate legal action will be taken against such traffic violators in the future. Directions have also been given to all challaning officers of this unit to conduct similar drives to eradicate traffic violations,” the official added.
SSP Traffic said that the ongoing drive, which has been in effect for a couple of days, has resulted in 80 to 90 challans issued to truckers for violations that often lead to breakdowns on NH-44. He also mentioned that during a separate special drive, five to eight trucks were challaned.
Meanwhile, a special drive targeting two-wheelers for helmet violations was carried out in Anantnag.
Mohammad Idrees, DySP Traffic Anantnag, said that on Wednesday, around 100 challans were issued to two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets.
“The drive focused on areas such as Main Town, Lal Chowk, KP Chowk, and Khanabal in the Anantnag district,” he said.
