Handwara, Dec 06: A two-year-old boy was mauled to death by a leopard in Shirhama village of Mawar, Handwara, on Friday evening, sending shockwaves across the area.
The victim, Hasanain Nisar, son of Nisar Ahmed Teli, was reportedly playing in the yard of his house when the leopard attacked him and dragged him away. Hasanain was the only child of his parents.
Eyewitnesses said locals immediately launched a rescue operation and rushed the injured boy to NTPHC Qalamabad. He was later referred to GMC Handwara, where doctors declared him brought dead.
This incident comes just days after wildlife officials captured leopards in the same area, highlighting an ongoing issue of human-wildlife conflict in the border area. Over the past months, more than half a dozen wildlife attacks have been reported in Mawer area, with several injuries recorded.
Residents expressed outrage over the continued presence of wild animals in the area despite efforts by wildlife officials. Many locals believe deforestation and habitat destruction are forcing wildlife into residential areas, escalating the threat to human lives.
Sheikh Khurshid, MLA Langate, visited the site and condemned the incident, terming it deeply unfortunate. He directed wildlife authorities to intensify their efforts to capture the animals and prevent further casualties.
“This is a heartbreaking loss, and I extend my condolences to the grieving family. Wildlife officials must act swiftly to ensure the safety of residents in this area,” said Sheikh Khurshid.
The recurring wildlife attacks have created an atmosphere of fear among the villagers, who are calling for immediate measures to address the issue and protect lives in the area.
