Srinagar, Aug 26: A joint team of security forces claimed to have arrested three terrorist associates in the Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Saturday, recovering six hand grenades from their possession.
According to a police spokesman, a joint operation was conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir Police along with the 28 Rashtriya Rifles. The process led to the apprehension of two terrorist associates affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba in Kupwara. During the operation, five hand grenades of Pakistani and Chinese origin were recovered from the suspects.
He stated, “Acting on credible information, the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Army’s 28 RR launched an operation to intercept two terrorist associates who had received a consignment from an unidentified individual in Kupwara. The individuals were traced while moving towards Shatmuqam village, following instructions from Lashkar-e-Taiba commander GhulamRasool, also known as RafiaRasool. He is originally from ChandigamLolab but is now based in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The apprehended individuals were identified as Zubair Ahmad Shah Peerzada and PeerzadaMubashirYousf, both residents of Shatmuqam, Lolab, Kupwara. The security forces successfully apprehended the suspects as they attempted to flee.” He further added, “Five hand grenades and three mobile phones were recovered from the apprehended individuals. Initial investigations suggest that the duo had been assigned to select local targets to disseminate government schemes in the area. They had also shared photographs indicating potential targets with their handlers.”
The police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. This operation stands as a remarkable success for the security forces, thwarting a potentially grave terrorist incident in the Lolab valley, a spokesman added. In another incident, Kupwara Police and 47 RR (Bihar), acting on reliable information, established a joint checkpoint in the general area of DragmullahShalpora. This resulted in the interception of a vehicle and upon searching, one hand grenade was found concealed beneath the left front seat. The accused, identified as Zahoor Ahmad Khan, was apprehended and taken into custody. The police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act at Police Station Kupwara.
