For centuries, Kashmir has harboured literary geniuses. From the riveting verses of ancient poets to the enthralling prose of contemporary writers, the valley has preserved a centuries-old tradition of storytelling. Many young writers emerging from the valley are continuing this legacy of their forebears, leaving their mark on the literary world.
Among the many emerging talents, one name stands out, Faizan Mushtaq (Faiz). This 18-year-old literary prodigy hails from Sudoorkoot Payeen in Bandipora. On July 23, Faizan secured the Rastra Prerna Award 2023 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, in the literature category for “The best young emerging writer in India” for his outstanding contributions to the field of literature.
Faizan’s interest in literature began in his early adolescence, when he was away from home preparing for a competitive exam. Solitude, he says, inspired him to pick up the pen and create his own narrative. Unaware that this would soon provide him with a sense of purpose and lift him to the national stage of literary acclaim.
When Faizan submitted his work for the prestigious award in December, he had no idea what was in store for him. With hundreds of competent people rooting for the position, Faizan felt anxious. Nevertheless, he was able to stand out among the significant number of competitors, which is an achievement.
When asked how he felt representing his district as well as the state at a national level, Faizan said, “It feels unreal representing my district, Bandipora, at a national level. Moreover, having a chance to represent Kashmir, my homeland, fills me with enormous satisfaction and a sense of responsibility to continue the region’s literary tradition.”
At the age of 18, Faizan has co-authored more than 70 books in collaboration with national and international authors from various countries. Adding to this, his very own notable accomplishment is his published work, “When Love Lasts,” which is a compilation of poems based on the themes of Unity and love. Faizan has also contributed to the international anthology “Broken Soul”, enhancing his position on the international literary stage.
When asked how he was able to co-author such numerous titles, Faizan responded that his main aim is to unite authors from all around the world, as literature knows no boundaries. “I approached many publishing houses with the idea of bringing together authors from various cultural backgrounds, and J.C. Publications agreed. As difficult as the task appears to be, it was definitely worth it once the book was completed and ready for publication.”
Faizan credits Kashmiri author Faheem Ul Islam, from Pulwama, as a key influence on his writing. “Faheem Ul Islam’s works have touched my heart. He creates magic with his words, and it has inspired me to explore the depths of my own imagination.” At the same time, Faizan acknowledges the role of his teachers who encouraged him throughout his journey and instilled in him the confidence to follow his aspirations fervently.
Faizan, while speaking about his challenges, said that, like any new artist, he too faced moments of self-doubt in his journey, and he still does. However, he has learned to overcome these challenges by taking small breaks and restarting when he is mentally at ease. These periods of self-reflection have been crucial in rekindling his creativity and motivating him to write some of his most meaningful works.
In addition to this, Faizan, while elaborating on his writing journey, admits that negative comments from people could arise. To overcome these mental barriers, he relies on a two-pronged strategy: first, he chooses to disregard these pessimistic views, and second, he actively applies positive thinking to boost his confidence.
“Sometimes even cultural and societal challenges act as significant barriers to achieving a set goal”, says Faizan. Born in a place where literature is not always fully appreciated, he has encountered people that discouraged him. However, he remains unperturbed, firmly believing in the revolutionary power of words. To him, literature has the power to heal people and spark change, which makes him even more driven to leave a positive mark with every word he writes.
Faizan’s story is an inspiration to budding authors everywhere. It exemplifies the strength of dedication and perseverance in continuously pursuing one’s dreams. As Faizan builds his literary path, he aspires to use his words to bring about a real change in society. Simultaneously, he hopes to be an IAS officer, motivated by the same noble desire to make a difference in people’s lives.
Faizan’s journey highlights the life-changing impact that literature can have as well as the enormous talent that is emerging in Kashmir. He is truly an example that age is no limit to brilliance and that the written word has the power to cross borders, cultures, and generations.
