Srinagar, Aug 24: An unidentified terrorist was killed, soldier was injured in a brief gunfight with security forces in the Watergam area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla on Saturday, police said.
A police officer told Rising Kashmir that said terrorists opened fire on a police checkpoint in Watergam. Security forces, including the Sopore Police and 32 Rashtriya Rifles (32RR), swiftly responded, leading to a shootout with the terrorists.
“Alert security forces retaliated. During the initial gunfight, one soldier sustained injuries and was immediately evacuated to the hospital. After a brief gunfight unidentified terrorist was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of the encounter,” he said.
The police said incriminating materials including arms & ammunition were recovered from his possession. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation, he said.
“The injured soldier was shifted to Army hospital, where he is out of danger and stable,” the police officer said.
Meanwhile police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated.
Army Spokesman said that consequent to specific intelligence of the area, a joint team of Army and Police was fired upon by terrorists in the Watergam area of Sopore. Vigilant troops swiftly responded and a firefight ensued, he said.
Earlier on 19th Aug, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) inspector was killed in an encounter with a group of terrorists in Dudu Basantgarh area of Udhampur district in Jammu region.
