Srinagar, June 17: Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh Saturday said that terrorism is dying a slow death in the region, and continuous infiltration attempts are being made from across the Line of Control border to keep the terrorism alive in Valley.
Talking to reporters on the side-lines of Jashn-e-Dal event in Srinagar, the DGP said terrorism is dying a slow death but some attempts are being made by neighbouring country and their agencies to push in terrorists just to keep the terrorism alive.
DGP Singh said the anti-infiltration grid along the LoC is strong and security forces are alert and doing their responsibilities very well. They are continuously foil the attempts made by the terrorists.
“For the first time in a long time, the people of J&K are reaping the peace dividends as children return to school, business activities continue uninterrupted, and tourists arrive in large numbers. It’s a good trend,” he said.
DGP Singh stated that while security forces foiled the majority of infiltration attempts this year, some terrorists did manage to enter this side through the Rajouri-Poonch and Kupwara sectors.
“Recently, they targeted civilians and security forces. The operation and investigation in the case are ongoing, and the perpetrators will be brought to justice very soon,” he said.
Concerning the Kupwara encounter, in which five foreign terrorists were killed on Friday, the Police Chief stated that six infiltration bids were recently foiled, including one in JamagundKupwara, in which five Pakistani terrorists were neutralised and a large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from them.
“The security forces conducted another infiltration bid in the Poonch sector, where a group of terrorists were pushed back and were not allowed to enter this side,” said the DGP.
In response to a question about whether ‘continuous infiltration bids were a violation of the existing Ceasefire between India and Pakistan,’ DGP Singh stated that the agreement is being followed by either side, but there are some efforts to push terrorists into this side, particularly in Rajouri, Poonch sector, and Kupwara.
“We have taken action against the infiltrator group, and I am confident that people at the top understand that it has good evidence, peace, and stability to the region.” Despite attempts, the number of people who have infiltrated is very low,” he said.
Concerning the upcoming Yatra, DGP Singh stated that all security arrangements are in place to ensure a smooth and peaceful pilgrimage.
“On behalf of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, we extend a warm welcome to all Yatris. Security and other civil administration-made armaments are in place, as they are every year,” he said.
DGP Singh stated that pilgrims will ensure that each pilgrim returns with fond memories. The DGP stated that the people of J&K have rejected violence and are leading peaceful lives. “I congratulate the youth of Jammu and Kashmir for choosing peace over death and destruction.” “There aren’t many young people joining terrorist organisations,” he said.
“People are roaming around and planning their trips without fear,” he explained. Some elements continue to hatch plots to disrupt peace, but “police are active and fighting on all fronts to foil such plans.”
On narcotics and the addiction of a large number of J&K youth to drugs, DGP Singh stated that the police have done a lot of work in this area, and other agencies have advocated for a social initiative by civil society to combat the problem in addition to the ongoing police war on drugs.
“Today, we must work together to eradicate the drug menace from society,” he said.
Earlier, in his address to the crowd, he stated that the Jashn-e-Dal is an opportunity to showcase Kashmir’s hospitality. “The event is organised under the J&K police’s Civic action programme, and it is an opportunity to showcase Kashmir’s hospitality.”
“Some 600 children having interest in water sports are participating in the event. We want to provide them a platform at national and international level,” he said, adding that Dal Lake is not just beautiful but peaceful as ever,” he said.
