Poonch, Jan 29: A temporary employee of the Power Development Department (PDD) was seriously injured on Thursday after receiving an electric shock while repairing a power transmission line in the Barachhar area of Loran Block under Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district. The injured worker has been identified as Mushtaq Ahmad, son of Hakam Din, aged about 35 years and a resident of Garang Loran. The incident occurred during repair work on a damaged power line at Barachhar Bela Sethi, which had been disrupted due to heavy snowfall in the area. According to reports, a proper shutdown had been obtained from the department before commencing the repair work. However, during the operation, the line suddenly became live, resulting in Mushtaq Ahmad receiving a severe electric shock. He subsequently fell from the electric pole and sustained serious injuries. The injured worker was immediately shifted to the Sub-District Hospital, Mendhar, where doctors have stated that his condition is stable. Meanwhile, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) PDD Mandi, Mohammad Farooq, while commenting on the incident, said that the shutdown had been taken by the concerned Junior Engineer (JE). He added that an inquiry would be conducted to ascertain how electricity resumed in the line despite the approved shutdown. “If any official is found guilty, strict action will be taken as per law,” the AEE said. Local residents and temporary PDD employees have expressed serious concern over the recurrence of such incidents and demanded a fair and transparent investigation. They alleged that similar incidents involving temporary workers have occurred in recent days due to negligence, placing the lives of field workers at constant risk. They urged the administration to enforce strict safety protocols and ensure accountability to prevent such accidents in the future.
