Srinagar, Aug 19: Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Monday wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India and demanded an exception to permit advertisement distribution to newspapers during Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in Jammu and Kashmir.
On Aug 16, the Election Commission of India announced the schedule for assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir. The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has immediately been implemented.
“With the MCC in place, advertisements related to development have been suspended from the date of announcement of polls, until the completion of elections,” Tarigmai said in a letter addressed to CEC Rajiv Kumar.
He said while adherence to the MCC is crucial, it is important to consider the severe impact this decision has on the already struggling print media industry in the region.
“The print media fraternity had also endured significant financial losses for the period of MCC imposed during recent Parliamentary elections, and they are now facing similar circumstances. The suspension of government advertisements, which serve as a critical source of revenue, has exacerbated their difficulties,” Tarigmai said.
The CPI(M) leader said that in view of the financial challenges faced by the print media fraternity, it would be highly appreciated if an exception to permit advertisement distribution is made as soon as possible.
“This would not only provide print media with much-needed relief but also ensure their sustainability, enabling them to continue playing its vital role in society, especially during the electioneering process,” the letter said.
Government advertisements play a crucial role in the financial sustainability of print newspapers. These ads provide a significant source of revenue for newspapers, enabling them to maintain their operations and continue to produce high-quality content for the public.
Government advertisements are a vital source of revenue for many print newspapers, particularly those that operate in smaller markets or have a limited circulation. These ads help to offset the costs of production and distribution besides helping to preserve jobs in the newspaper industry. Without these ads, many newspapers might not be able to sustain their workforce, leading to job losses and a decline in the quality of reporting.
Government ads enable newspapers to provide important public services, such as news, information, and analysis. By providing a platform for government agencies to communicate with the public, newspapers can facilitate transparency and accountability.
The presence of government advertisements in print newspapers helps to promote democracy by ensuring that citizens have access to information about government policies, programmes and services.
