Srinagar, Sept 22: Security forces on Monday averted a possible tragedy after detecting and destroying suspected explosive material near the tourist hub of Dal Lake in Srinagar, officials said. According to officials, a police patrol noticed a suspicious object lying close to Ghat No. 12, Nehru Park, adjacent to the Regional Passport Office, Srinagar. On closer inspection, it was found to be an explosive device connected with two detonators. The area, which remains busy with tourists, locals, and office-goers, was immediately cordoned off and movement restricted. A Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was rushed to the spot to handle the device. “The suspicious explosive was destroyed on site in a controlled operation without causing any damage or injury,” an official said. Police said the swift response prevented a potential incident in one of the city’s most sensitive and crowded zones. Senior officers later visited the spot and reviewed the security measures. Although the nature of the explosive material is being examined, officials said preliminary reports suggest it could have been placed to create panic in the area. “Investigations are underway to ascertain the source and the motive,” they added. Security has been further strengthened around Dal Lake and adjoining areas, including the Boulevard Road, which is frequented by tourists. Police have urged people to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious objects or activity to the authorities.
