Ganderbal, Sept 16: Students of the Royal Institute of Paramedical Sciences, Ganderbal Tuesday held a protest after the Indian Nursing Council (INC) decided to withdraw recognition for its nursing programmes. The move, which comes into effect from October 26, 2024, means that the institute’s GNM and B.Sc Nursing degrees will remain valid only within Jammu and Kashmir, raising uncertainty over students’ future prospects outside the Union Territory.
Scores of students gathered outside the campus and staged a demonstration, carrying placards and urging the authorities to safeguard their careers. Many alleged that the institute had failed to fulfil promises of affiliation renewal. “We have worked hard for these years, but now we are worried about the value of our degrees," said one student during the protest.
Students pointed out that an INC inspection team had visited the institute in 2023 and highlighted gaps in infrastructure and staff strength. However, according to them, little progress has been made since then. “Our seniors are on the verge of completing their courses without proper registration. This leaves us anxious about what lies ahead,” another student remarked.
The institute presently runs courses in FMPHW, GNM, B.Sc Nursing and B.Sc MLT. Without INC recognition, students fear their qualifications may face hurdles in professional licensing and employment opportunities, particularly outside J&K.
"We still hope the issue will be resolved, but we cannot remain silent forever," said the protesting students, appealing for swift action.
