Srinagar, Jan 14: The northern army commander Lt General Upendera Dwivedi Sunday said that the military has initiated proactive measures against terrorists in the Rajouri-Poonch belt and there will be special focus on enhancing collaboration among different security agencies to fortify the overall security framework.
Speaking to reporters during a function in Srinagar, he said in recent years, the Rajouri-Poonch region has experienced economic growth, tourism growth, marked by increased investment and employment opportunities. However, our neighbouring country seems unwilling to accept the prevailing peace and prosperity, leading them to support terrorism in the area, the northern commander said.
“We have initiated robust measures to address this challenge, and you will witness effective control in the days to come,” the Northern Commander said, adding that out of 7 points, 5 5 points have been achieved and work on 2 is underway.
He said that the northern border area is sensitive or not normal. On the past year, the northern army commander said they have declared 2023 as a zero-infiltration year, which means there was no infiltration from the Line of Control in 2023,
“If you see, among the terrorists that have been killed, only 21 are locals whereas 55 are foreign terrorists. We are taking action against these as well.,” the northern army commander added.
Notably, the army suffered 20 casualties in the past year due to a series of attacks in the Rajouri-Poonch belt.
The commander also mentioned that in 2022, 122 persons took up arms, while in 2023, only 19 joined terrorist activities. We remain committed to curbing local terrorist recruitment. Efforts are underway to enhance collaboration among diverse security agencies,” he said.
“We have started reorientation in the Pooonch and Rajouri sector and more police stations are coming up to curb the terrorism in the area,” the Northern Commander said.
Earlier Northern Commander bestowed the prestigious Northern Command Flight Safety Trophy for the year 2022-23 upon the 663 Army Aviation Squadron (R&O). The squadron’s exceptional performance, characterized by a commendable record of accident-free flights in challenging conditions throughout the year, underscores their steadfast dedication to skill, safety, and professionalism.
He also lauded the exemplary contributions of Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Navy (IN) personnel for their outstanding commitment.
In a poignant ceremony held at Chinar War Memorial, Lt Gen Dwivedi, joined by Chinar Corps Cdr, veterans, and active-duty soldiers, illuminated candles during the wreath laying function on the eve of Veterans Day 2024. The event illuminated the sacred portals of the war memorial and reaffirmed the commitment of the Indian Army to its brave soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
