Family appeals for compensation
Ganderbal, May 5: A Bakerwal family suffered heavy losses after more than 43 sheep and goats were killed and six others injured in a stray dog attack at Naad Nallah in Gund area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.
Officials said the livestock belonged to Nazir Ahmad Barkat, son of Mehmood Barkat, a resident of Rajouri, who is presently putting up in the area along with his family for seasonal grazing.
According to details, 26 goats and 17 sheep were found dead, while six others sustained injuries after a pack of stray dogs allegedly attacked the flock late at night.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Nazir Ahmad said that his son was staying near the livestock when the incident occurred.
“During the night, a pack of stray dogs suddenly attacked our livestock. Before we could respond, more than 40 sheep and goats had been killed,” he said.
He said the family immediately informed the police, following which a team reached the spot and took stock of the situation.
Nazir Ahmad said the family has suffered losses worth several lakhs of rupees, adding that livestock was their only source of livelihood.
“We survive by rearing and selling these animals. This is a devastating loss for us and it will be very difficult to recover,” he said.
He appealed to the administration and MLA Kangan to provide compensation and take necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
