Samba, May 1: A road safety awareness programme was held at Bhargava Higher Secondary School, Samba on Thursday to highlight the critical importance of traffic discipline and safety. The event was led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Traffic Rural Jammu G L Sharma, who addressed students and staff on the urgent need to follow road safety norms.
During his address, Sharma shared startling statistics, revealing that India loses over 1.60 lakh lives annually in road accidents, with 1.72 lakh fatalities recorded in 2023 alone. Jammu and Kashmir witnesses around 900 such deaths each year. Globally, more than 11 lakh lives are lost in road accidents annually, leaving many injured and dependent on their families.
He emphasised that traffic discipline not only saves lives but also reduces public inconvenience and saves valuable time. Sharma called upon the younger generation to lead by example, spreading awareness within their families and communities by adhering to the Motor Vehicles Act and traffic regulations. The programme was conducted in collaboration with the school management. Rajesh Sharma, Managing Director, and the Principal of the school actively participated in the event. Also in attendance were Shri Sukhdev Singh Jamwal, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Traffic Samba-Kathua, and Inspector Rakesh Kumar, DTI Samba. Sharma affirmed that such awareness initiatives would continue and be intensified in the coming days to instil responsible road behaviour across all sections of society.
