Srinagar, July 11: In a display of frustration and concern, a number of women from the Downtown area of Srinagar took to the streets on Tuesday to protest against the installation of smart meters in their localities. The protestors blocked the road, demanding the immediate rollback of the smart meter installation.
The women voiced their grievances, stating that they are already burdened with hefty tariff bills and fear that the introduction of smart meters will lead to a doubling of their electricity expenses. Many protesters expressed their inability to pay the existing bills, let alone afford the potentially exorbitant amounts that might follow the smart meter implementation.
Adding to their discontent, the protestors accused the power department of failing to deliver on its promises, as they continue to experience persistent electricity shortages despite paying regular tariff bills. Bilkeesa, one of the demonstrator, argued that rather than investing in smart meters, the department should prioritize improving the infrastructure and ensuring reliable electricity supply for the people.
The women stressed the challenging financial situation faced by the majority of the residents, most of whom are daily wage laborers. They claimed that the installation of smart meters would only add to their burden, making it even more difficult to make ends meet. They urged the government to reconsider the installation of smart meters in Srinagar, keeping the best interests of the common people in mind.
This protest is not an isolated incident, as several demonstrations have taken place in different locations throughout Srinagar against the installation of smart meters. The residents allege that their electricity bills will skyrocket once the smart meters are operational. However, officials from the Power Development Department maintain that there will be no change in tariff bills following the installation.
