Srinagar, Mar 01: With preparations in full swing, the iconic Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden is set to welcome visitors after March 15, featuring expanded parking facilities and two new tulip varieties imported from the Netherlands.
Nestled between Dal Lake and the Zabarwan Hills, the garden boasts 1.7 million tulip bulbs of 75 varieties. Authorities anticipate another record-breaking season after last year’s overwhelming response, which saw 4.5 lakh visitors in just 30 days.
Javid Masood, in charge of the Tulip Garden, said workers are relentlessly ensuring the garden is ready on time. “Nearly 100 gardeners and casual laborers are engaged in maintenance and beautification. We expect an even higher footfall this year,” he said.
To accommodate the anticipated rush, the parking space has been expanded. “Last year, we struggled with congestion due to the overwhelming number of visitors. This time, we have increased parking capacity to provide a smoother experience,” Masood added.
Local shopkeepers are also gearing up for the influx of tourists. Riyaz Ahmad, who runs a handicraft store near the garden, expressed optimism. “The tulip season is the best time for us. We see a good number of customers, including foreign tourists, who love to buy Kashmiri shawls and souvenirs.”
Tourists are equally excited. Anil Sharma, a visitor from Delhi, said, “I visited last year, and it was breathtaking. The idea of more tulip varieties this year makes me want to return.”
The Tulip Garden entered the World Book of Records (London) as Asia’s largest in 2023, solidifying its global appeal. Authorities have also introduced e-tickets to facilitate easy access for visitors.
With vibrant blooms and enhanced facilities, this year’s tulip season promises to be a delight for nature lovers and tourists alike.
