Srinagar, Dec 25: Amidst the intensifying cold wave, Srinagar recorded the second coldest night of the season, with temperatures plunging to minus 7.3 degrees Celsius. Pulwama and Shopian districts faced even harsher conditions, with temperatures dropping to minus 9.3 degrees Celsius.
The sharp drop in temperature led to the formation of a thin layer of ice on water bodies across the Kashmir Valley, including Dal and Nigeen lakes. Residents and visitors alike felt the chill as the region braced for continued cold weather.
According to MeT records, Srinagar had recorded minus 8.5°C on December 21, the lowest December temperature since 2000. Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, told Rising Kashmir that the region is expected to see some relief from the prevailing cold weather conditions starting December 26. However, cold wave conditions are expected to persist in isolated areas over the next two days. Dr. Ahmad added, “From December 26 to 27, the weather will remain generally cloudy, with light rain over Jammu plains and light snow over the higher reaches of Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal Range.”
From December 29 to 31, dry weather will prevail, with cloud cover expected on December 31. Dr. Ahmad also mentioned that light snowfall is anticipated at isolated locations from January 1 to 2, 2025.
