Srinagar rejoices: Muharram-08 procession back after decades, says LG

Srinagar, July 27: In a significant development, the Muharram-08 procession was allowed in Srinagar after a gap of 34 years, marking a historic occasion for the region.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his happiness and highlighted the peaceful conduct of the procession, which took place in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing the National Convention on “Sufism: A Bridge Between Communities” at SKICC, LG Sinha emphasized the rich cultural heritage of J&K as the land of Rishis and Sufis. He stressed that the region respects all spiritual and religious streams and mentioned that the era of street violence in Jammu and Kashmir has come to an end, ushering in an era of peace and harmony.
The Lieutenant Governor commended the efforts to neutralize the supporters of terrorism and separatism, promoting peace and inclusivity in the society. He urged against politicizing religious events and called for unity to ensure peace and prosperity in the region.
Speaking about the positive changes in the area, LG Sinha shared that the nightlife has returned, and people can now venture out late at night for shopping and recreation without fear. He credited the elimination of street violence for this positive transformation.
The positive developments in Jammu and Kashmir have brought hope and aspiration to the youth, fostering a desire for progress and prosperity in the region. With peace prevailing, LG Sinha urged everyone to contribute towards the development and growth of Jammu and Kashmir.
Acknowledging the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and other martyrs in Karbala, LG Sinha paid tribute to them and recognized the historic significance of the Muharram procession after 34 years, following its traditional route in the Kashmir Valley. The National Convention on “Sufism: A Bridge Between Communities” was presided over by Governor of Kerala, Arif Mohammed Khan, who also praised the contributions of LalDed, Nund Rishi, Sufis, and Saints from Jammu & Kashmir in fostering unity and peace.
The event was organized by Cluster University of Srinagar in collaboration with J&K Academy of Arts, Culture, and Languages, and it witnessed the participation of various dignitaries, officials, and students.
Prof. Qayyum Husain, Vice Chancellor, Cluster University of Srinagar gave a detailed overview of the Convention.
The conference was attended by Rajeev RaiBhatnagar, Advisor to Lt Governor; Padma Dr SP Varma; Vice Chancellors of various Universities; senior officials of UT administration; prominent citizens, students in large numbers attended the inaugural ceremony.

Yomi-Ashoora holiday tomorrow
The Jammu and Kashmir administration announced on Thursday that the holiday on account of Ashoora has been postponed to Saturday ie., July 29.
In a partial modification of Government order No. 1596-JK(GAD) of 2022 dated 30-12-2022 and Government order No. 1597-JK(GAD) of 2022, dated 30-12-2022, it is hereby ordered that the holiday on account of “Ashoora” shall now be observed on July 29instead of July 28.
