In the world of sports, few stories are as inspiring as that of Aqsa Gulzar, a young and dynamic pencak silat athlete from Nowshera, Srinagar. Her journey from the serene valleys of Kashmir to the global stage of martial arts is a testament to her unwavering determination, hard work, and the support of her mentors and community. Aqsa’s achievements in pencak silat have not only brought glory to her hometown but have also made India proud on the international stage.

Aqsa Gulzar’s journey into the world of pencak silat began in the picturesque region of Nowshera, Srinagar. Pencak silat, a traditional martial art form originating from Southeast Asia, requires a unique blend of physical agility, mental focus, and strategic thinking. Aqsa’s passion for the sport was evident from a young age, and she quickly rose through the ranks, showcasing her talent and dedication.

Aqsa’s list of accomplishments is nothing short of extraordinary. Her journey to success began with a bronze medal at the Senior National Championship in October 2022. This was just the beginning of a series of remarkable achievements that would follow. In August 2023, she clinched a gold medal at the 11th Senior National Championship held in Nasik, Maharashtra, solidifying her position as one of India’s top pencak silat athletes.

Her international debut was equally impressive. At the 19th World Championship held in Malaysia from July 26 to 31, 2022, Aqsa secured a bronze medal, marking her arrival on the global stage. Later that year, she won a gold medal at the Asian Championship held from October 11 to 17, 2022, further establishing her dominance in the sport.

The year 2023 was another milestone in Aqsa’s career. She won gold at the 6th Federation Cup in Goa (January 19-21, 2023) and continued her winning streak at the 12th Senior Pencak Silat National Championship in Odisha (June 10-13, 2024). Her success extended beyond national borders when she claimed gold at the 8th Asian Pencak Silat Championship in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, from October 10 to 16, 2024.

Aqsa’s crowning achievement came at the 20th World Pencak Silat Championship held in Abu Dhabi from December 18 to 22, 2024, where she secured a gold medal for India. Her performance at the championship was a testament to her skill, perseverance, and the unwavering support of her coaches and mentors.

Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Aqsa shared her thoughts on her journey and the importance of sports in empowering women. She highlighted her participation in the Asmita Khelo India North Zone Pencak Silat Women’s League held in Agra from February 10 to 12, 2025, where she won yet another gold medal. Aqsa’s success is not just a personal triumph but also a source of inspiration for young athletes, especially women, in Kashmir and across India.

She said that her achievements would not have been possible without the guidance and support of her coaches, Mohd Iqbal and Irfan Aziz Botta, who played a pivotal role in shaping her career. She also expressed her gratitude to the Islamia College of Science and Commerce, particularly Principal Dr. Tehmina Yousuf, HOD Commerce Dr. Seema Bashier, Dr. Farooq Ajaz Shah, Prof. Aijaz Mir, and Prof. Amin Mir, for their encouragement and support.

Aqsa Gulzar’s journey is a shining example of how talent, hard work, and determination can overcome challenges and achieve greatness. Her success in pencak silat has not only brought her personal accolades but has also put Kashmir on the map of international sports. She is a symbol of hope and resilience for countless young athletes who aspire to follow in her footsteps.

As Aqsa continues to represent India on the global stage, her story serves as a reminder that with passion, perseverance, and the right support, dreams can indeed become reality. Aqsa Gulzar is not just a champion in the arena of pencak silat; she is a champion of hope, breaking barriers, and inspiring a generation to strive for excellence.
