SRINAGAR, MAY 09: In preparation for the upcoming LokSabha polls in the 02-Srinagar Parliamentary constituency, the District Election Office, Srinagar has transformed polling stations into vibrant spaces, conveying messages of inclusivity, environmental sustainability, and youth engagement.
Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, the District Election Officer and Returning Officer for the 02-Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency, highlighted the efforts to make the polling process more inclusive and engaging for voters.
The District Election Office has established eight Pink Polling Stations dedicated to women voters, painted in pink to symbolise women empowerment. These stations, managed entirely by women staff, aim to emphasise the importance of women’s participation in the democratic process.
Additionally, eight Red Polling Stations have been set up for persons with disabilities, staffed by differently-abled individuals and equipped with facilities like wheelchairs, ramps, and Braille scripts to ensure a smooth voting experience.
To engage the youth, eight polling stations have been painted in blue across Srinagar District, encouraging young voters to actively participate in the electoral process.
Furthermore, to promote environmental sustainability, eight polling stations have been coloured green, emphasizing the importance of environmental awareness and responsibility. These stations will also be plastic-free, with plantation activities planned on polling day.
In addition to these special initiatives, all general polling stations across Srinagar have been equipped with facilities such as drinking water, toilets, electricity, wheelchairs, and ramps, in line with ECI guidelines on Assured Minimum Facilities.
The 02-Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency comprises 2135 polling stations across 18 Assembly Segments, with approximately 17.50 lakh electorates set to decide the fate of 24 candidates in the LokSabha polls on May 13, 2024. Notably, over 2 lakh first-time voters, aged 18-20, are expected to cast their votes for the first time in the constituency.
The District Election Office’s innovative measures aim to create an inclusive, engaging, and environmentally conscious voting environment, ensuring that every eligible voter can exercise their democratic right smoothly and confidently.
