Srinagar, Aug 1: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, V K Bidhuri said that the solution to the suicides happening along the banks of Jehlum and its bridges is not fencing but strengthening the psychological and family values.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of reviewing the ongoing work on Balidan Stambh at Pratap Park, Bidhuri said that there are two perspectives on this matter. One is that fencing is necessary. However, the type of incidents occurring require a different approach. The solution lies not in fencing, but in strengthening psychological and family values.

On being asked about the demand for enhanced safety measures that people are demanding that where there are hotspots, there should be an SDRF team and a River Police team to respond promptly, Bidhuri said that the point is valid and has been taken well. “CCTV and other monitoring tools should be included to keep an eye on these areas”, he said.

On being asked about the issue of mushrooming coaching centers and their safety, Bidhuri said that the children who go to coaching centers are being monitored completely. “The whole thing has been inspected recently. A painful incident in Delhi has made us more concerned about fire safety than anything else”, he said.

“Our teams, including SMC and district administration, are actively working on fire safety measures. So far, I am satisfied that, especially in big coaching institutes, adequate fire arrangements are in place”, he added.

On work progress of Balidan Stambh, Bidhuri said that work is going on day and night. “It has to be completed because we want this to be a tribute to the martyrs who have sacrificed their lives. This will be integrated into the main program of August 15th”, he added.
