Jammu, Jan 17: In a heartwarming start to the New Year, SMVD Narayana Hospital at Kakryal conducted critical Cochlear Implant Surgeries on four congenitally deaf children, granting them the gift of sound.
The surgeries, performed by Dr Rohan Gupta, Consultant ENT, marked a significant milestone for the hospital, according to an official press release issued here.
Two of the beneficiaries came from economically deprived families, unable to afford the costly surgery. “The Shrine Board’s decision to sponsor these surgeries was met with immense gratitude from the families, who saw it as a manifestation of Mata’s blessings transforming the lives of their children,” the hospital said.
Dr Rohan Gupta, under the guidance of Dr Sunil Kotwal, Senior Consultant, led the surgeries. The children, born with deafness and Severe to Profound Sensori-neural Hearing Loss (SNHL) due to Cochlea malfunction, now have restored hearing capabilities thanks to the miraculous Cochlear Implant device.
Over the past six years, SMVD Narayana Hospital has performed 40 Cochlear Implant Surgeries with zero complications. State-of-the-art OTs, a professional ENT team, and the Shrine Board’s financial support have contributed to this impeccable achievement.
Dr Rohan Gupta expressed the hospital’s readiness to handle complicated cochlear surgeries, citing the success of a particularly complex case among the beneficiaries. He highlighted the hospital’s proactive approach, including awareness campaigns, radio talks, and special camps, resulting in increased awareness among parents.
Two of the surgeries involved children below two years of age, signifying a positive trend of early exploration of treatment options. Dr Rohan stressed the importance of early detection for effective treatment in such cases.
During discharge, parents were counselled about the crucial role of post-operative rehabilitation and speech therapy for a favourable outcome. Dr Rohan emphasized the need for collaborative efforts from all stakeholders to eradicate deafness among congenitally deaf children.
Dr Gopal Sharma, Chief Administrative Officer of SMVDNSH, lauded the visionary guidance of the Chairman (Lieutenant Governor JKUT), and the wholehearted support of the CEO Shrine Board in advancing the hospital’s usefulness for society. He reiterated the Shrine Board’s commitment to continuous improvement for the betterment of society.
